Rhodes and Symi in Pictures

Rhodes is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece for tourists who want to spend two weeks lying on a beach getting a suntan. What you may not realise is that Rhodes has the most wonderful old town. A couple of hours spent wandering around the old town is extremely rewarding, especially in the early morning when the only people about are the local Greeks. Narrow lanes with old houses and arches, beautiful gardens, shops from a bygone era are all waiting for those who want more out of a holiday than a suntan to show off to your fellow workers when you get back to the office.

With these photographs, taken in 1988, I hope to show you a side of Rhodes that you may not see in the holiday brochures, although I have included photos of some of the more famous sites as well.

My other sites

Minoan Crete now contains around 500 photos of 60 Minoan archaeological sites in Crete together with a description of each site, site plans and a number of video clips.

Realm of the Maya. In 2008 I spent two weeks in Central America visiting some of the major archaeological sites of the Maya as well as seeing the sights and people of Guatemala. Here are some of the pictures I took.

The Parthenon Marbles is a site I created together with my class of Advanced English students in Rethymno, Crete. It gives the history of the Parthenon Marbles, the positions of the British and Greek governments, the British Museum, and contains lots of documents and photos of the Marbles.

Karpathos in Pictures contains 34 photos taken in 1988, mainly in the mountain village of Olympos where women still wear traditional costume in their everyday work, and life is lived in a way that no longer exists in other parts of Greece and is probably destined to die out soon on Karpathos itself.

Crete in pictures. I live on the island of Crete and this gives me the opportunity to photograph Crete when it is at its best -- in the winter. Visit this site to see some photos of Crete as it is never seen by the tourists.

Ian's Home Page contains pages on subjects of interest to me and, I hope, to others. Topics include: the environment, human rights, Crete (where I live), music, beer, the campaign against landmines, and the charity, Sightsavers International.
